About The Sector
As sunlight is the most abundant source of potential energy on the planet it could easily exceed the current and future electricity requirements of the planet. According to the U.S. Department of Energy enough energy from the sun reaches earth every hour to meet the world's energy usage for an entire year. Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity. Sunlight can be converted directly into electricity using photovoltaics (PV) or indirectly with concentrated solar power (CSP) which normally focuses the sun's energy to boil water which is then used to provide power. Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam. The concentrated heat is then used as a heat source for a conventional power plant. Photoelectric applications use photovoltaic cells in converting energy from the sun into electricity. The photovoltaic effect is a process by which light from the sun hits a cell and is absorbed by a semiconducting material such as crystalline silicon. The individual cells are arranged onto a panel and then several panels are arranged into an array, which can be scaled to produce enough capacity to generate the desired amount of power.
This type of energy has been a significant source of job creation globally with the majority of jobs created being for white collar or highly skilled workers including engineers, sales representatives and installers. Statistics show that for every job created by the industry between 1.8 and 2.8 jobs are created in other segments of the economy. Indeed European PV employment data estimates that 28 jobs are created per MW of energy that is installed. It is estimated that there are over 260,000 people currently employed in the industry in Europe and the European Photovoltaic Technology Platform estimates that the PV industry could create over 2,000,000 jobs globally by 2020. Within the United Kingdom the Renewable Energy Association has estimated that there are approximately 25,000 people employed in the industry however this number may change radically due to the government's decision to cut the subsidy for power.
