The Energy Practice comprises a group of highly experienced professionals specialising in techno-economic and management consultancy services for the energy sector, with particular emphasis on the power sector, including least-cost investment planning, renewable energy, regulation and smart networks. Projects are split almost equally between the UK and overseas – the practice has undertaken assignments in nearly 100 countries. We have a broad range of clients, including multi-lateral lending agencies, governments, regulators, electricity companies, natural resources companies and private. In the UK the practice is involved in pioneering assignments working closely with distribution companies, universities and leading companies in the application of smart technology to improve the utilisation of electrical distribution systems. Our strength lies in our ability to combine strategic, financial/economic and technical advice as an integrated consultancy service to public and private sector clients.

Purpose:

We wish to grow and develop the skills and expertise of the Energy Practice within Ricardo Energy & Environment, in line with our plans for the development of the practice. Therefore, we are seeking an International Renewables/ Solar Specialist within the Energy sector with the ability and potential to drive and participate in this growth.

We are flexible with regards to where this role can be based.

Key accountabilities:

Candidates will be responsible for leading, managing and participating in planning, feasibility and due diligence studies for the developers of renewable generation projects internationally. This will include advising on the technical capabilities of renewable technologies to provide inputs to generation planning and feasibility studies, working with project developers, power utilities and financiers to negotiate contracts, and providing inputs to due diligence assessments of renewables projects.

In addition, it is also expected that candidates will play a key role in managing key client relationships and the preparation of winning proposals in their area of expertise.

Key competencies and experience:

A project developer with proven experience of developing renewables projects internationally, including resource assessment, site selection, feasibility studies, project design, tender specification and adjudication and supervision of project implementation. Experience of working in developing countries in Asia and Africa (and/or Small Island Developing Countries) is required. The individual must have a detailed understanding and knowledge of multilateral donor organisation requirements and should have been involved in at least one donor funded investment program. The individual should have experience working with project funders and power utilities, including the negotiation of Power Purchase Agreements. Prior experience in developing renewable energy specific national plans would be preferable. Experience of working on the owner’s/lender’s engineering team would be an advantage.

Previous consultancy experience is essential

A Bachelors or Master’s degree within a relevant discipline, or equivalent qualification
